Option 1: Free Copy and Paste Method

If all you want to do is add new BBM symbols to your Blackberry Messenger name, then the process is pretty simple. All you need to do is copy and paste. However, if you’re looking to add a suite of new BBM symbols to your Blackberry Messenger symbol library, well things aren’t quite as simple, but still doable. Both of methods below make use of the symbols I’ve included below these instructions. I’ve scoured the web and collected all the symbols I could find for you so you don’t have to go do it yourself. Alright, let’s dive in.

How to add new BBM symbols to your Blackberry Messenger name

• Copy the BBM symbols below
• Paste them into an email and send it to your Blackberry
• In your Blackberry, copy the symbols from the email
• Paste the desired symbols into your BBM name

That’s it! You should now have a nifty new symbol in your BBM name.

How to add new symbols to Blackberry Messenger chat

While adding cool BBM symbols to your name is fun, it’s not as cool as adding new on-demand symbols to BBM chat. Here you have two options. The first option is to keep the symbols on your Blackberry as a text file and go to it every time you need to copy and paste a symbol for use in BBM chat. But let’s face it, that isn’t very practical and it’s a lot of work just to add a special character. This second option is to add the symbols one at a time using AutoText. Unfortunately, this is not as easy and is quite time consuming depending on how many characters you want to add. Also, some of the characters don’t render properly, and there’s no gaurantee that you’ll be able to use the character you’re after. As stated above, this method relies on your Blackberry’s AuoText feature. Here are the instructions:

• Copy the BBM symbols below
• Paste them into an email and send it to your Blackberry
• In your Blackberry, copy the desired symbol from the email
• Navigate to your AutoText options ( Options → AutoText )
• Press the menu button and select “New”
• Set a ‘Replace’ phrase as the word you want to use to generate the symbol but make sure not to use “real” words.
• Paste the symbol into the ‘With’ line and then save

For example lets say you wanted to create a new AutoText for the umbrella symbol below. In your Blackberry Options → Autotext you would type something like “brella” in the ‘Replace’ field and then paste the picture of the umbrella in the ‘With’ field and click save. Now when you go to BBM and type “brella” and a space the symbol will display. Repeat this process for each symbol.

In addition, you can now insert symbols and emoticons right into your BBM status message since it’s BBM connected. The app gives you access to over 630 smileys, flags & ASCII art images. And the best part is that even if the person your messaging doesn’t have Easy Smiley Pack 2.0 installed, the symbols and emoticons will still show up for them.

Option 3: Jingu Smileys App (free)

The Jingu Smileys app is a free BlackBerry application adds some fun and cool emoticons to your handset. It comes with over 1000 Smileys, Flags, Emojis, ASCII images, Text and Emoji art made just for BBM.

To use the app, open up a BBM conversation, press the menu key and you can access all the Jingu Smileys. Next you need to copy the smiley you want and paste it into the conversation. A handy feature is that you can access your recently used smileys easily without having to scroll the entire symbol library.

Another cool feature that comes with the Jingu Smiley’s app is that you can view Text Art created by the community and submit your own.

Option 4: The Fancy Characters App

If you want awesome new BBM symbols and have an extra $0.99 to spare then you should think about grabbing the Fancy Characters app

How it works:

Using Fancy Characters is pretty simple. When you want to insert a symbol, press the ‘menu’ key and you’ll see a new option that says ‘Fancy Characters’. Selecting it will allow you to browse through the Fancy Character symbol library, which contains BBM symbols of all kinds, including flags for countries.

When you find the symbol you want, simply select it and it inserts. I really like the app because it’s fast, convenient and really easy to use. Plus you great looking symbols that most other people don’t have.

If there are any negatives about the app it’s that there are a few limitations for select users. If you’re a CDMA user you won’t be able to insert a symbol into SMS messages. But for every other function — email, BBM, status updates — you’re good to go. CDMA users also might not see all the symbols in the library. You can get access to more by installing East Asian Language and Input Support, which you can find in the Desktop Manager. Lastly, you’ll need BBM 5.0.0.57 or higher in order to see colored smileys.

For the more technically inclined, DIY type people, the free copy and paste method will work just fine for you.
